1. Organization. A property manager will be juggling paperwork and dealing with multiple homes at once. Depending on your exact position, you may be delegating work to others.

2. Persistence. Sometimes the market experiences a bust. Sometimes you have to evict a difficult resident. It’s not always easy, so you need to have a positive attitude whenever you can.

3. Math. You don’t need to be a mathematical genius, but whenever finance is involved, it’s important for you to keep track of all the important numbers.

4. Communication. You’ll be working closely with other people, so good communication skills are a must! Not only will you be answering questions, but you can expect to have mediate a few arguments now and again. Diplomacy and leadership are also important skills to have.

The Big Pluses

1. Did you know that a majority of property managers are self-employed? That’s right! If you want to make your own schedule, this might be the job for you. You won’t be trapped behind a desk all day, but you’ll be making frequent visits to certain homes and other properties. There is definitely some administrative work to be handled, but along with a healthy dose of on-site visits.

2. There’s a current boom! Well, sort of. While the costs of buying a home have been steadily increasing for decades, there is a presently a huge spike in rentals. Adults of all ages are preferring to rent, lease, and sublet, meaning that the demand for property managers is going up, since less and less properties are currently available.

3. You don’t need a specific degree or certification. When it comes to real estate management, the most important thing is experience and internships. A background in mathematics, economics, or business administration is a good start, and as the market varies it’s a good idea to garner experience with hot spots. For instance, much of the American population is aging, so management of healthcare facilities and assisted-living homes are especially marketable right now. That said, no one degree or background is better than another. It’s all about optimizing the present.
Similarly, there’s no training course or set of specific required skills. As long as you have the above traits, some motivation, and solid ethics, you’re already a step ahead. If you get involved with a property management company, it’s likely they will invest in you and provide training and classes tailored to property management.

4. You’ll never be bored. Truly every day is a little different than the ones before. Property management is not a Monday through Friday, 9-5 job. There is nothing mundane or tiresome about it. The environment is generally fast-paced, which means you’ll almost always have something new to learn and a new challenge to overcome.

5. You’ll get to work with others. Who doesn’t love a good team?! In property management, communication and collaboration are a must. Interacting with your clients and residents is an exciting opportunity to exercise several different roles: advisor, educator, and counselor included, although this is not an exhaustive list. Property management is a tangibly rewarding job because of your close contact with real, hardworking, everyday people.

6. There’s nothing to get tired of. Some fields really leave you stuck in a rut after a while. Some jobs have no opportunities for advancement. Still others might have you progressing up the ladder but unable to express your creative side. Property management is a great choice because the industry is ever-evolving. There is always something new going on, and as a result, the number of opportunities in field management is increasing.
